Gill and Axar setup Indian win over England: 1st ODI (Edgbaston)

Skipper Shubman Gill posted a classy fifty as India began the three-match ODI series with a comfortable six-wicket victory over England at Edgbaston, chasing down 259 with 28 balls to spare.

England made a promising start after winning the toss, reaching 61 without loss before Axar Patel triggered a dramatic collapse with four key wickets.

Joe Root anchored the recovery with an unbeaten 76, while Liam Dawson marked his return with a valuable 68 as England recovered to post 258 all out.

India’s chase was built around 80 from Gill, who retired hurt with cramps after laying the foundation for victory. Axar Patel capped an outstanding all-round display by scoring an unbeaten 57, while Washington Sundar contributed a composed 52 not out as the pair shared an unbroken century partnership to guide India home.

The convincing win handed India a 1-0 lead in the series and extended England’s difficult run in white-ball cricket.

India 262 for 4 (Gill 80, Patel 57*, Sundar 52*, Tongue 1-50) beat England 258 (Root 76*, Dawson 68, Axar 4-62, Prasidh 2-50) by six wickets.
