1995: Richardson ton in vain as Aussies beat Windies 2-1 (Jamaica)

Richie Richardson produced one of the most courageous centuries of his distinguished Test career in the fourth Test against Australia at Sabina Park, Kingston, beginning on 29 April 1995.

Winning the toss and choosing to bat, West Indies found themselves under constant pressure from a disciplined Australian attack. Richardson stood firm amid the collapse, compiling a determined 100 from 222 deliveries in 344 minutes. His innings, decorated with 12 fours and a six, showcased exceptional patience, sound technique and unwavering concentration against one of the strongest pace attacks in world cricket.

Richardson found his best support from Brian Lara, whose fluent 65 added some much-needed stability, but the remainder of the batting order failed to make an impact. No other West Indies batsman reached 23 as Australia’s bowlers maintained relentless pressure throughout the innings.

Paul Reiffel claimed three wickets, while Brendon Julian and Shane Warne took two apiece to dismiss the hosts for 265. Richardson’s century, the 24th of his Test career, was widely regarded as a lone masterpiece in an otherwise disappointing batting performance.

Australia responded with an imposing total of 531, turning the match decisively in their favour. Steve Waugh produced one of the finest innings of his career, compiling a majestic double century, while Greg Blewett contributed 81 and Mark Waugh added an elegant 65. Their commanding batting display gave Australia a first-innings lead of 266 runs and placed the West Indies under enormous pressure on a wearing Sabina Park pitch.

Forced to follow on, West Indies were unable to mount a serious challenge and were dismissed for 213 in their second innings. Glenn McGrath and Shane Warne combined superbly to complete an innings-and-53-run victory, securing a 2–1 series triumph and the Frank Worrell Trophy for Australia.

Although the match is remembered as a defining moment in Australia’s rise to world dominance under Mark Taylor, Richardson’s gritty century remains a shining example of individual resilience in the face of overwhelming adversity.
