A historic double century from Towhid Hridoy was the key as Bangladesh produced a remarkable fightback on the third day of the second Test against West Indies in Sylhet, taking a 30-run first-innings lead after being dismissed for 386.
Towhid Hridoy led the recovery with a magnificent unbeaten 242, his maiden Test double-century, rescuing the hosts after they had slipped to 138 for six. Hridoy’s marathon innings featured 22 fours and 11 sixes, while Mushfiqur Rahim contributed 34 as Bangladesh recovered from their difficult overnight position of 88 for three.
Towhid registered Bangladesh's highest individual Test score, surpassing Mushfiqur Rahim's 219 not out, and became the first Bangladeshi to convert a maiden Test century into a double century.
West Indies began their second innings cautiously, reaching seven without loss at stumps, still trailing by 23 runs. Hridoy’s extraordinary innings transformed the contest after the visitors had appeared firmly in control following their first-innings total of 356, built around Amir Jangoo’s 133.
With the match finely balanced, West Indies will look to establish a substantial lead on the fourth day, while Bangladesh will be encouraged by their dramatic recovery and first-innings advantage. West Indies 356 and 7 for 0 (King 5*, Da Silva 2*) trail Bangladesh 386 (Hridoy 242*, Mushfiqur 34, Warrican 4-104, Seales 2-58) by 23 runs.
