South Africa's bowling attack led by Dale Steyn cut through the Australian top order in swingfriendly conditions.
Ricky Ponting was defiant but if not for Graeme Smith putting down a simple catch on the stroke of lunch the Aussies would have been in dire trouble in the opening session.
