AB de Villiers agonisingly fell for 99, but his innings helped ensure a huge first-innings lead for the hosts.

South Africa had slipped to 173 for five before De Villiers and Ashwell Prince steadied the innings with a sixth-wicket partnership of 97. At stumps the Proteas were 209 ahead.

South Africa 389 for 9 (Boucher 49*, Tahir 24*) lead Sri Lanka 180 by 209 runs.
