Leg spinner Steve Smith took three late wickets to give Australia the edge after Ian Bell's 109.

Bell joined an elite trio with his third Ashes century in successive Tests. Bell had a 144-run stand with Jonny Bairstow (67) and his dismissal was the first of three wickets in the space of 31 minutes for reduced

England from 4 for 271 to 7 for 289 at the close.England 289 for 7 (Bell 109, Bairstow 67, Smith 3-18, Harris 3-43).
