Honours even despite Philander strikes: 1st Test, Day 1 (Durban)

Vernon Philander struck twice as bad light brought an early close with Australia on 225/5 after 76 overs after the visitors had won the toss.

Philander struck with the last ball before lunch to dismiss Warner (51). Smith scored 56 before a cut shot against Maharaj bounced off the gloves of wicketkeeper Quinton de Kock to AB de Villiers at slip.

Mitchell Marsh and Tim Paine added an unbroken 48 for the sixth wicket to even proceedings late in the day.

Australia 225 for 5 (Smith 56, Warner 51, Philander 2-36) v South Africa.
