Root, Malan set 383 target for NZ: 2nd Test, Day 4 (Christchurch)

New Zealand leading 1-0 in the series were set a target of 383 to win by England. This would be the seventh-highest successful chase in Test history.

Resuming at 3-202, Joe Root (54) and Dawid Malan (53) started brightly. Jonny Bairstow smashed 36 before the declaration was made. Colin de Grandhomme took 4-94.

Openers Jeet Raval and Tom Latham successfully battled 23 overs as NZ ended at 42-0 in their second innings when the players left Hagley Oval at 4.12pm.

New Zealand 278 and 42 for 0 (Latham 25*, Raval 17*) need another 340 runs to beat England 307 and 352 for 9 dec (Vince 76, Stoneman 60, Root 54, Malan 53, de Grandhomme 4-94).
