Afghanistan downs Bangladesh, reaches first semi: 2024 T20 World Cup S8 (St Vincent)

Afghanistan qualified for the semi-finals of a World Cup for the first time by beating Bangladesh by eight runs in a tense low-scoring match that went down to the wire.

Afghanistan scored just 22 runs between overs 10 to 15, and sat at a peculiar 80-1 with five overs to play in the innings. They ended on 115-5.

In reply. opener Litton Das anchored the innings, ending on 54 not out, but they lost veteran Shakib al Hasan and captain Najmul Hossain Shanto to successive balls from Naveen in the third over. Bangladesh stuttered to 105.

India and Afghanistan advanced into the knockouts with Australia’s tournament ending thanks to losses to both nations.

Afghanistan 115 for 5 (Gurbaz 43, Rishad 3-26) beat Bangladesh 105 (Litton 54*, Rashid 4-23, Naveen 4-26) by eight runs via DLS method.
