Show Event Category Summary

The ICC World Test Championship (WTC) is a tournament organized by the International Cricket Council (ICC) to determine the world champion in Test cricket, the longest and oldest format of the game.

In October 2017, the ICC announced that the format had been agreed upon by its Test playing members, which would involve the top nine teams playing series over two years with the top two teams qualifying for a World Test League Championship Final.

WTC league games are organized by the host nation's cricket board, whereas the final is organized directly by the ICC.

  • Cycle Duration: Each WTC cycle runs for approximately 2 years.
  • Participants: The top 9 Test-playing nations (currently: Australia, India, England, Pakistan, South Africa, New Zealand, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, West Indies).
  • Matches: Teams play a set number of Test series (usually 6) — 3 at home and 3 away — against predetermined opponents.
  • Points System: Teams earn points for each match won, drawn, or tied. The points are standardized across series.
  • Final: The top two teams on the points table at the end of the cycle face off in a one-off Test match to decide the champion.

Past Champions:

  • 2019–2021: New Zealand defeated India in the final.
  • 2021–2023: Australia defeated India in the final.
