Vaman Viswanath (VV) Kumar (born June 22, 1935, in Madras), was a right arm leg‑spin bowler renowned for his accuracy and classical technique.
He played just two Test matches in 1961, debuting against Pakistan, where he took a five‑wicket haul (5/64), and claimed a total of 7 wickets at an average of 28.85 .
Despite this promising start, he couldn’t secure a permanent spot in the national side—mainly due to stiff competition from legendary spinners like Subhash Gupte and Bhagwat Chandrasekhar—earning the reputation of being one of Indian cricket’s great “unlucky” talents .
At the domestic level, Kumar starred for Madras/Tamil Nadu from 1955–56 to 1976–77, amassing an impressive 599 first‑class wickets at an average just under 20, including 36 five‑fors and eight matches with ten wickets
