Mystery spinner with deadly carrom ball

B Ajantha W Mendis

Ajantha Mendis made his debut for Sri Lanka in 2008 and last played for Sri Lanka on December 26, 2015, against New Zealand in Christchurch.

Mendis announced his arrival on the world stage with a spell of 6/13 against India in the Asia Cup 2008 final. In the very next Test series against India at home, Mendis broke the record of the most wickets taken in a 3-Test debut series by picking 26 wickets.

Mendis later went on to become the fastest ever to 50 ODI wickets and till date remains the only bowler to take 6-wicket-hauls in T20s twice. Another unique record that Mendis still holds is being the only bowler in the sport's history to have picked 6-wicket-hauls in all the 3 formats of the game.

Famous for his "carrom ball", Mendis snapped 70 wickets in 19 Tests, 152 in 87 ODIs and 66 in 39 T20Is, but he couldn't prolong his career due to injuries. He retired from all forms of the game in August 2019.
