Born in Dominica on 12 June 1948, Norbert Phillips was a lively right arm pace bowler who had the ability to move the ball around and find an extra yard of pace on occasions.
He was also a hard-hitting middle-order batsman who had played with success for the Combined Islands in the Caribbean where he captained the Windward Islands in 1983.
He made his Test debut on March 31, 1978, against Australia at Georgetown during a period when the main West Indies players were taking part in World Series Cricket.
Phillips had a successful county career. His inaugural season with Essex in 1978 was impressive, taking 71 wickets at an average of 22.40 and scoring 645 runs at 26.87, including his only first-class century (134) in a successful chase against Gloucestershire.
