
Christopher Lance Cairns was born on 13 June 1970 in Picton, New Zealand. He is the son of former cricketer Lance Cairns and was an all-rounder.
Representing New Zealand from 1989 to 2006, Cairns was celebrated for his powerful middle-order batting and effective right-arm fast-medium bowling.
Cairns made a memorable unbeaten 102 to win the final of the 2000 ICC KnockOut Trophy (now the Champions Trophy) for NZ against India in Kenya
In 62 Test matches, Cairns amassed 3,320 runs at an average of 33.53, including five centuries. He also claimed 218 wickets at an average of 29.40, with best bowling figures of 7/27.
In 215 ODIs, he scored 4,950 runs at an average of 29.46 and took 201 wickets at 32.80.
Post-retirement, Cairns faced significant probes in match fixing. He also had serious health challenges. In August 2021, he suffered a major heart attack leading to an aortic dissection, resulting in paralysis from the waist down. Subsequently, in February 2022, he was diagnosed with bowel cancer.
