Sean Abbott, born on 29 February 1992 in Windsor, New South Wales, is a right-arm fast-medium bowling all-rounder who bats right-handed.
He began his cricketing journey with Baulkham Hills Cricket Club before progressing to grade cricket with Parramatta District. Abbott made his limited-overs debut for New South Wales at 18 and had a breakthrough season in 2013–14, leading the Ryobi Cup in wickets and earning the Steve Waugh Medal as NSW Blues Player of the Year.
He debuted internationally in 2014 against Pakistan, taking the wicket of Shahid Afridi with his fourth ball in T20I cricket.
Playing in a shield game in 2014, Abbott delivered a short-pitched ball that struck Phil Hughes on the neck, just below his helmet, causing a rare vertebral artery dissection. Despite immediate medical attention on the field and emergency surgery, Hughes never regained consciousness and passed away two days later at the age of 25.
Despite intermittent national appearances, Abbott remained a domestic stalwart, notably scoring a 34-ball century for Surrey in the 2023 T20 Blast. He was part of Australia’s 2023 Cricket World Cup-winning squad.
