John Edrich: Scorer of a record breaking Triple Century

Edrich, John H

John Edrich was a tough left handed opening batsman who played for Surrey and England. He is a cousin of Bill Edrich.

After making his Test debut against the West Indies in 1963 at Old Trafford, Edrich formed a formidable opening partnership with Geoff Boycott in the 1960s. They shared 14 stands of 50-plus in 21 Tests.

Edrich scored 39,790 runs in First Class Cricket at 45.47 and 103 centuries. In 77 Tests, he scored 5,138 runs at 43.54 in a career that lasted from 1963 to 1976. 7 of his 12 hundreds were against arch rivals Australia.

Edrich had a top score of 310 not out against New Zealand at Headingley in 1965. This epic innings included the most amount of boundaries scored in any Test match innings.

In 1971, Edrich scored 82 off 119 ballsĀ in the first ever One Day International, against Australia at the MCG in January 1971. He was also named the man of the match in this historic match.

Edrich was awarded an MBE before retiring in 1978 to work as marketing director for a bank in Jersey. He went onto serve Surrey CC in several posts and was as a Test selector in 1981. The entry gates at the southern end of The Oval was named after him in 2015.
