WTC Final: How South Africa upset favourites Australia to bury choker tag (Lords)

In a tense finish, South Africa ended their long wait for a major ICC title by beating Australia by five wickets in the WTC final to cause a major upset.

Aiden Markram resumed the day on 102 and was out for 136 when only six more runs were needed. His monumental innings lasted six hours, 23 minutes and was awarded the player of match award.

South Africa starting at 213-2 overnight moved to 282-5, the second-highest successful run chase in the 141-year at the home of cricket, Lords.

South Africa had previously lost five World Cup semi-final eliminations. They also lost to India in the 2024 T20 World Cup final. The choker tag is now firmly behind them after this stunning win in the WTC final.
