Karun Nair holds India together as Atkinson shines in gloom: 5th Test, Day 1 (Oval)

Returning paceman Gus Atkinson took 2-31 on a rain-hit opening day of the fifth Test at The Oval to have India on the back foot before Karun Nair struck a defiant fifty to effect a rescue late in the day.

England’s decision to bowl first under overcast skies paid early dividends as India slipped to 151 for 6. Nair and Sundar Washington staged a partial recovery with a 51 run stand for the 7th wicket.

Shubman Gill was run out for 21 in a mix-up, while Sai Sudharsan and KL Rahul fell cheaply as England’s seamers exploited the conditions well.

Despite the setbacks, India clawed back thanks to a gritty effort from the lower middle order, reaching 204 for 6 at stumps after 64 overs.

India 204 for 6 (Nair 52*, Washington 19*, Atkinson 2-31, Tongue 2-47) vs England.
