1935: Cameron, Mitchell deliver first ever South African win in England (Lords)

The 2nd Test between England and South Africa at Lord’s was a historic match that marked South Africa’s first Test victory on English soil, winning by 157 runs.

After South Africa won the toss and elected to bat they posted a modest first innings total of 228, with England responding with 198 to take a 30-run first innings deficit.

South Africa then built a commanding position in their second innings, declaring at 278/7 to set England a challenging target of 309 for victory.

The English batting collapsed under pressure in their second innings, managing only 151 runs as they were bowled out in just 67 overs. This comprehensive victory gave South Africa their first Test win in England and ultimately helped them secure a 1-0 series victory.

Key players who made significant contributions:

For South Africa:
Bruce Mitchell - posted 30 and 164 not out in his crucial role as opening batsman.
Eric Rowan - Made important contributions of 40 and 44.

Jock Cameron - The wicket-keeper batsman top scored with 90 in the first innings and was instrumental behind the stumps.
Xen Balaskas - The leg-spinner who was part of the bowling attack that proved too much for the English batsmen taking 5-49 and a match bag of 9 wickets.

For England:

Wally Hammond - One of England’s greatest batsmen, though he couldn’t prevent the defeat with scores of 27 and 27.
Hedley Verity - The Yorkshire left-arm spinner who was England’s premier slow bowler took 3 wickets in each innings.
Bob Wyatt - England’s captain who had the difficult task of trying to rally his team against a determined South African side playing inspired cricket. He posted 53 and 16.
