Padikkal leads Indian fightback after early setbacks: 2nd Test, Day 1 (SSC)

Devdutt Padikkal hit his second successive hundred as India ended Day 1 of the second Test in Colombo in a strong position at 300/5, after Shubman Gill won the toss and elected to bat.

After losing KL Rahul and Yashasvi Jaiswal early, Devdutt Padikkal and Gill steadied the innings with a crucial partnership. Padikkal continued his extraordinary series form, following his 167 in Galle with 117 from 193 balls, while Gill contributed a patient 50.

Sri Lanka fought back through Asitha Fernando, who finished with 3/46, but India recovered strongly after being reduced to 88/2.

Ravindra Jadeja made 43, before falling late in the day, leaving Dhruv Jurel unbeaten at the close. India also had some concern when Rishabh Pant retired hurt after being struck on the wrist, although early reports suggested the injury was not serious.
