Starc burst has South Africa reeling, puts Aussies on top: 3rd Test, Day 1 (Cape Town)

Left arm quick Mitchell Star was lethal with the second new ball as South Africa were dismissed for 329 on Day 1 of the third Test against Australia in Cape Town, after a promising start.

Opening batter Marques Ackerman narrowly missed a maiden Test century, scoring 95, while Aiden Markram contributed 78 to lay the foundation for a substantial first-innings total as the hosts were 202-1 mid way in the afternoon before a stunning collapse.

Marco Jansen added a valuable 52, helping the hosts recover and push beyond 300.

Starc was Australia’s outstanding bowler, claiming six wickets for 72 runs to dismantle the South African batting line-up. Nathan Lyon provided important support with two for 71 as Australia gradually seized control after the hosts’ strong opening partnership.

South Africa’s total of 329 gives Australia a competitive target to respond to, with the opening day setting up an intriguing contest in this series decider, with the teams level at 1–1.
