South Africa staged a superb recovery on Day 4 of the third Test against Australia at Newlands, transforming a 100-run first-innings deficit into a commanding 287-run lead. Resuming at 140 for 4, the hosts were inspired by outstanding centuries from Ryan Rickelton and Wiaan Mulder.
Rickelton posted a fighting 101 from 219 deliveries, while Mulder produced an impressive 115 from 221 balls. Their crucial sixth-wicket partnership of 154 runs turned the match in South Africa’s favour and helped the home side reach 387 before being dismissed. Mitchell Starc was Australia’s leading bowler, finishing with three for 65.
Australia now face a challenging target of 288 runs on the final day to win the Test and secure the series, which is currently level at 1–1.
South Africa’s bowlers will take confidence from the increasing assistance for spin on the Newlands surface, with the stage set for a compelling finish to the series decider.
South Africa 329 and 387 (Mulder 115, Rickelton 101, Ackerman 62, Starc 3-65) lead Australia 429 (Inglis 102, Carey 80, Renshaw 74, Harmer 4-104, Jansen 3-60) by 287 runs.
