The third ODI between West Indies and India was played at Kingstown, on April 30, 1997.
Batting first, West Indies posted a competitive 249 for 9 in 50 overs, built around an excellent innings from Stuart Williams, who scored 76.
Brian Lara contributed 33, while Carl Hooper added a valuable 48 to strengthen the middle order. India’s bowlers kept the scoring under control during the closing overs, but the home side had established a challenging target.
India’s chase began shakily with the early dismissal of Sachin Tendulkar, but Sourav Ganguly and Rahul Dravid transformed the innings with a magnificent second-wicket partnership.
Ganguly scored 79, while Dravid contributed 74, displaying patience and impressive stroke play. Their 130-run stand put India firmly on course for victory, and with wickets in hand, the visitors appeared well placed to chase down the target.
However, West Indies staged a remarkable comeback in the closing stages. Ottis Gibson spearheaded the recovery with an outstanding 4 for 61, while Courtney Walsh and Curtly Ambrose applied further pressure.
India lost their remaining wickets in quick succession and were dismissed for 231 in 48.2 overs, handing West Indies an 18-run victory.
Stuart Williams was named Player of the Match for his crucial contribution, as the hosts took a 2–1 lead in the series.
