1992: Ambrose routs South Africa after fighting return to Test arena (Barbados)

The West Indies and South Africa met in a historic one-off Test at Kensington Oval, Bridgetown, from April 18–23, 1992, following South Africa’s return to international cricket after more than two decades of isolation.

Batting first, the West Indies scored 262, with Desmond Haynes (58) and Keith Arthurton (59) leading the way. Richard Snell claimed four wickets for South Africa.

The visitors responded with 345, securing an 83-run first-innings lead, thanks largely to Andrew Hudson’s magnificent 163, scored over more than eight hours. Kepler Wessels contributed 59.

The West Indies fought back in their second innings, recovering from a difficult position through an unbeaten partnership between Brian Lara (86*) and Jimmy Adams (79*).

Their efforts lifted the hosts to 283, setting South Africa a target of 201 for victory. Lara displayed his exceptional stroke-making ability, while Adams provided valuable support and composure under pressure.

South Africa’s chase unravelled against the devastating pace of Curtly Ambrose and Courtney Walsh. Ambrose produced a match-winning six-wicket haul for 34 runs, while Walsh claimed four for 31 as South Africa were dismissed for 148.

Wessels scored 74 and Peter Kirsten 52, but the remainder of the batting order could not withstand the West Indian attack.

The hosts secured a memorable 52-run victory, with Ambrose and Hudson sharing the Player of the Match honours in this landmark encounter.
