Root, Woakes crush sorry Sri Lanka: 1st ODI (Riverside)
Veteran Joe Root inspired England to an easy five-wicket win against Sri Lanka.
England recovered from 80-4 in the 12th over as Root's unbeaten 79 from 87 balls saw them win with 15.1 overs to spare. Root and Moeen (28) put on 91 to seal the win.
Earlier, skipper Kusal Perera struck 73 from 81 balls and Wanindu Hasaranga a 65-ball 54 but the rest of batting was a sorry story as Sri Lanka posted only 185.
England 189 for 5 (Root 79*, Chameera 3-50) beat Sri Lanka 185 (Perera 73, Hasaranga 54, Woakes 4-18) by five wickets.
