Player profile:
Raina, Suresh K

Suresh Raina was a dynamic left-hand batting, exceptional fielder, and ability to shift momentum in the middle order.

Born on 27 November 1986, he became a vital part of India’s limited-overs setup through the 2010s and contributed significantly to the 2011 World Cup triumph. He was also the first Indian to score a T20I century and one of the few to register hundreds in all three international formats. A long-time pillar of the Chennai Super Kings, Raina earned the moniker “Mr. IPL” for his consistency and impact across the league’s formative years.

His career, though largely respected, intersected with controversy when his name surfaced in media coverage surrounding the 2013 IPL betting and spot-fixing investigation. Reports at the time suggested he may have been among the unnamed “six players” listed confidentially by the Mudgal Committee, whose identities were submitted to the Supreme Court in a sealed envelope. These names were never publicly released, nor were they formally charged or officially cleared, leaving the issue unresolved in the public record.

Across formats, Raina represented India in 18 Tests, 226 ODIs, and 78 T20Is, scoring more than 7,000 international runs. He made a memorable century on Test debut, collected five ODI hundreds and 36 fifties, and tallied over 1,600 T20I runs at a strong strike rate. A brilliant fielder with more than 100 ODI catches and a handy off-spinner, he added balance to India’s white-ball teams. In the IPL, he amassed over 5,000 runs for Chennai Super Kings, featuring in multiple title-winning campaigns and cementing his status as one of the competition’s most influential performers.
