Herbert Sutcliffe was one of the great English cricketers, a technical master with the bat and an assured captain; he was one of five players newly inducted into the ICC Cricket Hall of Fame in 2009.
On the 1928/29 Ashes tour, England's highest successful fourth innings run chase in their Test history was made at the MCG. From the 332-7 scored, Sutcliffe made 135 in six and a half hours, ensuring that England won the Ashes.
Despite his record first wicket partnership of 555 with Percy Holmes against Essex in 1932, it is with Jack Hobbs that he is most fondly remembered. In terms of average runs per partnership it is still the most fruitful in Test history.
He has the fourth highest Test batting average of all time with 60.73, bettered only by fellow ICC Cricket Hall of Famers Don Bradman, Graeme Pollock and George Headley.
Remarkably his batting average never dropped below 60 throughout his entire Test career. Together with Jack Hobbs, he holds one of the greatest records for batting pairings in Test history averaging 87.81 together in 38 innings with 15 hundreds and 10 fifties.
In first-class cricket he made 50,135 runs including 151 centuries.
In retirement, Sutcliffe was a successful businessman and also a Test selector. He died on January 22, 1978 at Cross Hills, Yorkshire aged 83 years.
