Graeme Swann: On par with Jim Laker as England's finest off spinner

Swann, Graeme P

Graeme Swann was born on 24 March 1979 in Northampton. He was an attacking right arm off spinner and a hard hitting lower order batsman.

After attending Sponne School in Towcester, he made his first class debut for Northamptonshire in 1997. He moved to Nottinghamshire in 2005.

A late bloomer, Swann made his ODI debut against South Africa in 2000. He then had a long 7 year in exile until he was picked on the Sri Lankan tour of 2007.

He made his Test debut in 2008 against India at Chennai where he took 4 wickets in the match. He took over from Monty Panesar as the No 1 spinner and played a key role in England's 2–1 victory in the 2009 Ashes win at home.

Ten wickets match bag

Swann became the first English off-spinner since Jim Laker to take 10 wickets in a match (10-132) when he achieved the feat in England's victory in the first Test in Bangladesh in 2010. He was named ECB Cricketer of the Year in 2010 was a key reason that England became the No. 1 ranked side in Test cricket. He was the No. 1 ranked bowler in ODIs in 2011.

He became the second English spinner to tale over 200 Test wickets (after Derek Underwood) when he helped England win a Test series in India after 28 years in 2012.

Swann captained England when West Indies toured England for two T20Is, standing in for Stuart Broad and Eoin Morgan.He retired from international cricket mid way through the Ashes tour in Australia in December 2013, after the series was lost.

Career record

Swann played 60 Tests and scored 1370 runs at 22.1. He took 255 wickets at 29.97 with a career best of 6-65.

Swann enjoys his music and is the front man for Dr Comfort and the Lurid Revelations, a band made up of a few cricketing tragics. He is involved with BBC's Test Match Special as an expert commentator.
