Pulasthi Gunaratne was a right-arm fast-medium bowler who represented Sri Lanka in 23 ODIs between 2002 and 2003.
Born in Colombo on 27 September 1973, he was a right-handed lower-order batsman and came into international cricket after several seasons of domestic first-class cricket, having represented clubs including Bloomfield, Tamil Union, Nondescripts and Burgher Recreation Club.
Gunaratne made his ODI debut against Bangladesh at the R. Premadasa Stadium on 7 August 2002. His bowling was based on seam and variation rather than outright pace, and he established himself as a useful supporting bowler during Sri Lanka’s limited-overs campaigns in 2002–03. In 23 ODIs he took 27 wickets at 33.62, with an economy rate of 5.68 and best figures of 4/44.
He was also part of Sri Lanka’s 2003 World Cup squad in South Africa, although he did not play in the team’s first two matches and appeared only once during the tournament, against Australia at Centurion, where he scored an unbeaten 15 from 15 balls. His final ODI came against Australia at Port Elizabeth on 18 March 2003. With only eight ODI innings, he finished with 36 runs at 7.20, including three not-outs.
