A B de Villiers: Scintillating stroke maker, smashed fastest ODI century

de Villiers, Abraham B

A B de Villiers was born on February 17, 1984 in Pretoria.

He is a right handed batsman and part time wicket keeeper who excelled at many sports in his youth. In his autobiography, AB dispelled many myths swirling around that he was a child prodigy at many sports "These are the facts: decent at golf, useful at rugby and tennis when I was young, and enjoying cricket ever since," he said.

AB made his a debut as a 20 year old against England in the 1st Test in Dec 2004 at Port Elizabeth. Dale Steyn also made his debut in the same Test. This duo are destined to become the most famous pair of simultaneous debutants since Sachin Tendulkar and Waqar Younis began their Test careers opposing each other at Karachi in November 1989. De Villiers made 28 and 14, while Steyn conceded nearly five an over as England cantered to a seven wicket triumph with no hint of the greatness to follow.

In 2010, AB set a new South African Test record individual score of 278 not out against Pakistan in the 2nd Test at Abu Dhabi.

He currently boasts the fastest 50, 100 and 150 in ODI cricket after smashing a 31 ball century against West Indies in the 2nd ODI in Jan 2015.

In January 2016, AB de Villiers became South Africa’s Test captain on a permanent basis after taking over from Hashim Amla.
