James “Bonnor” Middleton (1865–1913) was a left-arm slow-medium bowler and useful right-handed lower-order batsman.
He represented South Africa in 6 Tests between 1896 and 1902, taking 24 wickets at an average of 18.41 with best figures of 5 for 51.
A consistent performer in domestic cricket, he played 31 first-class matches, capturing 140 wickets at 18.02, including a best of 7 for 64 and several ten-wicket match hauls.
Middleton contributed little with the bat—scoring only 52 Test runs at 7.42 and 176 first-class runs at 6.06—but his incisive bowling, highlighted by a match return of 12 for 100 in the 1897–98 Currie Cup final for Western Province, made him one of South Africa’s most effective pre-war bowlers.
