Omarzai, Atal blast Hong Kong in opener: 2025 Asia Cup No 1 (Abu Dhabi)

In the Asia Cup opener, Afghanistan delivered a commanding performance against Hong Kong, winning by 94 runs at the Sheikh Zayed Cricket Stadium in Abu Dhabi.

Afghanistan posted 188/6 in their 20 overs, with Sediqullah Atal anchoring the innings with an unbeaten 73 and Azmatullah Omarzai smashing a blistering 53 off just 21 balls, marking the fastest T20I fifty for Afghanistan.

In response, Hong Kong struggled against disciplined Afghan bowling, managing only 94/9, with Fazalhaq Farooqi and Rashid Khan making early inroads and creating pressure through key wickets and fielding brilliance.

Despite the dominant win, coach Jonathan Trott highlighted areas for improvement, particularly in consistency and handling pressure, while Omarzai was named Player of the Match for his explosive innings. The victory sets a strong tone for Afghanistan’s campaign in the tournament.

Afghanistan 188 for 6 (Atal 73*, Omarzai 53, Kinchit 2-24) beat Hong Kong 94 for 9 (Hayat 39, Naib 2-8, Farooqi 2-16) by 94 runs.
