Australia recovered from an early collapse to reach 241/6 at stumps on the opening day at Bellerive Oval.
After winning the toss and electing to bat, the hosts stumbled to 12/3, losing Warner (0), Khawaja (6) and Smith (0) cheaply.
Marnus Labuschagne added a fluent 44, but the innings was rescued by a superb counter-attacking century from Travis Head (101 off 113 balls, 12 fours) and a solid 74 from Cameron Green, their 121-run partnership shifting momentum back to Australia.
England’s bowlers, led by Mark Wood (3/59) and Chris Woakes (2/64), made inroads late in the day, but Alex Carey (10)* and Mitchell Starc (0)* saw Australia safely to stumps.
Stumps Day 1: Australia 241/6 (Head 101, Green 74, Labuschagne 44; Wood 3/59, Woakes 2/64).
