Greaves, Hopes in epic chase as Windies escape with a draw: 1st Test, Day 5 (Christchurch)

On Day 5 of the 1st Test between New Zealand and West Indies at Hagley Oval, Christchurch, the West Indies pulled off one of the most remarkable rearguard efforts in recent Test history to salvage a draw. Chasing a huge target of 531, they batted out 163.3 overs to finish at 457/6, denying New Zealand a win.

The hero of the final day was Justin Greaves, who crafted a gritty, unbeaten 202* off 388 balls — his maiden Test double century — anchoring West Indies’ chase when the match seemed all but lost.

Supporting him under pressure was Kemar Roach, unbeaten on 58*, and earlier in the innings Shai Hope had contributed a vital 140, helping build the foundation for the rescue.

The result — a draw — was a dramatic turnaround: having trailed 72/4 at one stage, West Indies defied the odds and turned the final day into a celebration of resilience, nerves, and Test-match temperament.

West Indies 167 (Hope 56, Chanderpaul 52, Duffy 5-34) and 457 for 6 (Greaves 202*, Hope 140, Roach 58*, Duffy 3-122) drew with New Zealand 231 (Williamson 52, Bracewell 47, Seales 2-44, Roach 2-47) and 466 for 8 dec (Ravindra 176, Latham 145, Roach 5-78).
