Matt Renshaw produced a magnificent career-best 190 off 397 balls to rescue Australia from a precarious position and guide them to 390 all out on Day 2 of the first Test against South Africa at Kingsmead, Durban.
Resuming at 187/6, Australia relied on Renshaw’s patience and resilience as he continued to frustrate the home attack. He shared a valuable 86-run partnership with captain Pat Cummins, who contributed 43, before combining with Nathan Lyon for a remarkable 134-run stand for the ninth wicket.
Lyon added 27 from 92 deliveries, helping Australia recover from 124/6 and post a competitive first-innings total.
South Africa made a shaky start to their reply, losing opener Ryan Rickelton for a duck to Josh Hazlewood early in the innings.
Aiden Markram, unbeaten on 15, and David Bedingham, not out on 12, steadied the innings before bad light brought an early end to play. South Africa closed Day 2 at 27/1, trailing Australia by 363 runs, with the hosts facing an important task on the third morning to prevent the visitors from gaining a decisive advantage.
South Africa 27 for 1 (Markram 15*, Bedingham 12*, Hazlewood 1-9) trail Australia 390 (Renshaw 190, Cummins 43, Mulder 4-68, Jansen 3-68) by 363 runs.
