Hazlewood six inspires Aussie win over South Africa: 1st Test, Day 5 (Durban)

Paceman Josh Hazlewood was the star as Australia completed a commanding 214-run victory over South Africa on Day 5 of the first Test at Kingsmead, Durban, taking a 1–0 lead in the series.

South Africa resumed their second innings at 102/4, still trailing by 319 runs, but Australia’s bowlers quickly dismantled the lower order to dismiss the hosts for 206. Aiden Markram’s 75 provided the main resistance, while David Bedingham contributed 46.

Josh Hazlewood was the outstanding performer, claiming a superb 6/49 to finish off South Africa’s hopes of survival. Matt Renshaw also chipped in with two wickets, completing an exceptional all-round performance.

Australia’s victory was built on Renshaw’s magnificent 190 in the first innings, which helped the visitors recover from a precarious position to post 390.

South Africa replied with 284, conceding a crucial first-innings lead before Australia declared their second innings at 314/6, with Renshaw adding 82 and Nic Maddinson scoring 48. Set a daunting target, South Africa struggled to withstand Australia’s relentless bowling attack on the final day.

Hazlewood’s match-winning spell and Renshaw’s outstanding contributions with both bat and ball ensured Australia secured a comprehensive victory, leaving South Africa with plenty to address ahead of the second Test.

Australia 390 (Renshaw 190, Mulder 4-68, Jansen 3-68) and 314 for 6 dec (Renshaw 82, Maddinson 48, Maharaj 2-56, Nortje 2-56) beat South Africa 284 (Bedingham 49, Cummins 3-54, Hazlewood 2-54) and 206 (Markram 75, Bedingham 46, Hazlewood 6-49, Renshaw 2-30) by 214 runs.
