Aussies attack threatens, but Kiwis fightback: 1st Test, Day 1 (Gabba)

An unbroken 80-run stand between former skipper Daniel Vettori (45 not out) and Dean Brownlie rescued NZ to 176-5.

Earlier, the Kiwis's had a shaky start when Australia's inexperienced bowling attack had threatened them by taking 5 wickets for 95 just after lunch.

Perth-born Brownlie (32 not out) was dropped by Clarke on three - a costly mistake.
