The Ashes, the legendary cricket series between England and Australia, began in 1877 with the first-ever Test match played at the Melbourne Cricket Ground.
The rivalry quickly grew after England lost to Australia on home soil in 1882, prompting a satirical obituary in The Sporting Times declaring that “English cricket had died, and the body will be cremated and the ashes taken to Australia.”
Herbie Collins captained Australia on the 1926 Ashes tour. Arthur Carr was chosen as England skipper. Carr was replaced by 25 year old Percy Chapman for the fifth and the final Test match at The Oval with the series locked in at 0-0. The Ashes were won back after a win by a thumping margin of 289 runs.
England retained the Ashes with a combination of tactical batting and accurate seam bowling. The series was low-scoring and rain-affected, leading to 4 drawn Tests out of 5.
