Show Event Category Summary

The Ashes, the legendary cricket series between England and Australia, began in 1877 with the first-ever Test match played at the Melbourne Cricket Ground.

The rivalry quickly grew after England lost to Australia on home soil in 1882, prompting a satirical obituary in The Sporting Times declaring that “English cricket had died, and the body will be cremated and the ashes taken to Australia.”

1978/79 Ashes

The 1978–79 Ashes series was a six-Test series played in Australia from December 1978 to February 1979. It was notable for being one of the most one-sided Ashes contests of the modern era because of the World Series Cricket (WSC) split, which left Australia severely weakened.
Mike Brearley's England team crushed a second string Australian team skippered by Graham Yallop by a margin of 5-1.

Key Performers

  • Ian Botham (England) – The standout of the series: 400+ runs and 23 wickets, establishing himself as one of the world’s premier all-rounders.
  • Geoff Boycott (England) – Anchored the batting with several key innings.
  • Bob Willis & John Lever (England) – Led a relentless seam attack.
  • Allan Border (Australia) – Emerged as a future star amid the chaos, scoring 391 runs and displaying resilience.
