The Nawab of Pataudi was born on 5 January 1941 and died on 22 September 2011. The Pataudi family’s cricketing genes run deep as his father Iftikhar Ali Khan Pataudi played Test cricket for England.
Young Pataudi played for Winchester. In 1957, in the summer holidays, Pataudi made his first-class debut for Sussex. By 1959 he was good enough to score 52 against a Yorkshire attack which included Trueman, Close, Illingworth and Don Wilson. Soon afterwards he went up to Balliol. He made a century (131) for Oxford against Cambridge.
Pataudi lost his right eye on July 1, 1961. He was involved in a car accident in Hove, England. He made his Test debut 6 months after losing his eye.
Pataudi went on to score 2793 runs in 46 Tests for India, scoring six centuries and 16 fifties.
At just 21 years and 77 days of age, Mansoor Ali Khan Pataudi became India’s youngest Test captain in March 1962.
Pataudi was, arguably, one of India’s greatest captains. Taking over the reins of the senior squad, Pataudi led India in 40 Test matches. He led India to their first ever overseas series win - over New Zealand in 1967.
Tiger was elected Indian Cricketer of the Year in 1962 and Wisden Cricketer of the Year in 1968.
