Jack Cheetham was a dour, right handed batsman who played 24 Tests for 883 runs with a high test score of 89.
Cheetham captained South Africa in 15 Tests from 1952 to 1955
After retirement, Cheetham became an administrator and served as president of the South African Cricket Association (SACA) in 1969. To avoid a total ban for its apartheid policies, Cheetham announced in 1969 that future South African teams would be chosen on merit rather than skin colour. His statement was immediately contradicted by Prime Minister Vorster and South Africa was banned in 1970.
Cheetham died in hospital in Johannesburg on August 21, 1980, aged 60.
