Geoff Howard was the younger brother of NZ spinner Hedley Howarth. He was a neat, well organised right handed batsman.
Howart made his first class debut in 1968 when he played for the NZ Under 23 XI. He went onto play for Surrey in the early 1970s. He made his Test debut against England at home in 1974/75.
He was captain of NZ from 1980 to 1985. During a new era of a majority of professional players representing New Zealand, Howarth was able to mould a winning combination. He captained 30 Tests for 11 wins, 7 losses and 12 draws. His ODI captaincy record was 60 matches for 31 wins and 26 losses. The most notable achievement was when Howarth led New Zealand to an improbable 1-0 test series win over the West Indies at their best in 1980.
Along with Glenn Turner and Andrew Jones, Howarth is one of only three kiwis to have scored hundreds in each innings of a test match.
Howarth retired after the 1984/85 series in the West Indies. He played 47 Test, scoring 2531 runs at 32.44, including six hundreds.
