Skipper Kumar Sangakkara top-scored with 75 as the hosts prospered against an untidy Indian attack to end the day in a dominant position on a helpful pitch.

Mahela Jayawardene made a patient 56 and Thilan Samaraweera remained unbeaten on 65 as Sri Lanka, leading 1-0 in the series, ended play at 293-4.

India missed an opportunity to exert pressure in this must win test.
