Stubbs dominates India, South Africa sniffs win: 2nd Test, Day 4 (Guwahati)

Tristan Stubbs came agonisingly close to a century as South Africa tightened their dominance on Day 4 of the 2nd Test, declaring at 260/5 in their second innings and setting India a colossal target of 549 runs.

Stubbs led the charge with a composed 94, while Tony de Zorzi added a steady 49 before Jadeja, India’s most effective bowler of the day with 4/62, broke through. Despite a few moments of resistance from India’s attack, South Africa’s batting control never truly wavered, and the declaration came with the match firmly in their grasp.

By stumps, India were left facing an almost impossible chase on a wearing Guwahati pitch, needing a historic effort to save the Test and the series. The home team had stumbled to 27-2.

India 201 and 27 for 2 (Jaiswal 13, Harmer 1-1) need another 522 runs to beat South Africa 489 and 260 for 5 dec (Stubbs 94, Jadeja 4-64).
