Williamson resists as Windies seamers dominate: 1st Test, Day 1 (Christchurch)

Kane Williamson was the anchor as New Zealand endured a difficult opening day in the 1st Test at Christchurch, finishing on 231/9 after being sent in by West Indies.

Williamson held the innings together with a composed 52, and Michael Bracewell added a fighting 47 to prevent a complete collapse, but wickets fell regularly throughout the day.

The West Indies pace attack dominated in overcast, seam-friendly conditions, with Kemar Roach, Justin Greaves and debutant Ojay Shields all striking at key moments.

Rain interruptions shortened play but did little to ease the pressure on the hosts, leaving the visitors firmly in control heading into Day 2 with only one wicket left to claim.

New Zealand 231 for 9 (Williamson 52, Bracewell 47, Shields 2-34, Greaves 2-35) vs West Indies.
