Phillips, Blundell rescue NZ after early collapse: 2nd Test, Day 1 (Oval)

Glenn Phillips helped New Zealand battle back from a difficult position to finish the opening day of the second Test at The Oval on 291-7 after England chose to bowl first.

The hosts made early inroads, reducing the Black Caps to 107-4 during the middle session, with debutant Sonny Baker impressing by claiming two wickets. Despite the setbacks, New Zealand’s middle order showed resilience, with valuable contributions from Rachin Ravindra and Daryl Mitchell helping to steady the innings.

The visitors strengthened their position in the final session through Tom Blundell and Glenn Phillips. Blundell compiled a well-made 51 before departing, while Phillips remained unbeaten on 49 at stumps to leave New Zealand in a promising position.

England’s attack continued to create opportunities throughout the day with Jacob Bethell taking two late wickets, but the Black Caps will feel they have edged ahead after recovering strongly from their early troubles.

New Zealand 291 for 7 (Blundell 51, Phillips 49*, Bethell 2-8, Baker 2-63) vs England.
