Mendis special inspires SL to thrilling win over England: 2nd ODI (Leeds)

Skipper Kusal Mendis struck a superb century as Sri Lanka produced a sensational 16-run victory over England in the second ODI at Headingley, levelling the three-match series at 1–1.

Batting first, Sri Lanka posted an imposing 321/6, powered by Kusal Mendis’ superb 121 from 100 balls. Kamindu Mendis added a valuable 54, while Pavan Rathnayake contributed 48 as Sri Lanka accelerated impressively through the middle and final overs.

England appeared well placed at 203/4, with Ben Duckett’s 67, Tom Banton’s 73 and Joe Root’s 44 providing a strong platform.

The decisive moment came when Jos Buttler, who was batting fluently, suffered a hamstring injury and retired hurt on 61. He returned late in the innings but was eventually dismissed for 63, leaving England’s lower order with too much to do.

Dunith Wellalage then played a crucial role with 3/49 as England finished on 305/9, allowing Sri Lanka to hold their nerve and secure a memorable victory.

Sri Lanka 321 for 6 (Kusal 121, Kamindu 54) beat England 305 for 9 (Banton 73, Buttler 69, Duckett 67, Jacks 52, Wellalage 3-49) by 16 runs.
