Sri Lanka delivered a convincing eight-wicket victory over England in the second ODI at the Tyronne Fernando Stadium, Moratuwa, on 20 March 1993, completing a 2–0 series triumph.
England struggled against Sri Lanka’s spin attack after being sent in to bat, managing just 180 in 48.5 overs. Graeme Hick top-scored with 36, while Robin Smith contributed 31.
Sanath Jayasuriya was the outstanding performer with the ball, claiming six wickets for 29 runs to dismantle the English batting order.
Sri Lanka made a confident start to their chase, with Roshan Mahanama scoring 29 and Chandika Hathurusinghe contributing 33 in an opening partnership of 66.
Although Ian Salisbury removed both openers, England could not make further inroads. Asanka Gurusinha remained unbeaten on 35, while Aravinda de Silva produced a magnificent match-winning 75 not out from 68 balls, striking seven fours and four sixes.
Sri Lanka reached 183 for two in just 35.2 overs, winning by eight wickets with 88 balls to spare. Jayasuriya’s devastating spell earned him the plaudits, while de Silva’s commanding innings ensured a comfortable conclusion.
The victory completed a comprehensive series sweep and reinforced Sri Lanka’s growing reputation as one of the most exciting and dangerous sides in international one-day cricket.
