Peter Siddle ignited the Gabba with 6 for 54, including the hat-trick to give Australia the upper hand.
Siddle claimed the wickets of opener Alastair Cook, Matt Prior for a duck and then trapped Stuart Broad LBW in the 66th over as England collapsed after tea. Only Ian Bell (76) stood firm to counter Siddle's brilliant bowling as the visitors were bowled out for 260.
Siddle said that "I was nervous, the crowd was all behind me, which pumped me up," he said of the hat-trick ball. "I'd like to say it was exactly what I wanted but I was looking to hit the top of off."
