Michael Holding: My career highlights in my own words

Michael Holding was labelled as Whispering Death by umpire Dicky Bird for his quiet approach to the wicket, followed by destructive pace.

Holding was the scalpel of speed that evolved in the formula of supreme pace. Along with Andy Roberts, Joel Garner and Colin Croft — and later, Malcolm Marshall — he was part of the famed quartet of pacemen deployed by the Windies in the late 1970s and 1980s.

Holding describes his entry into the West Indies team on the ill-fated 1975/76 tour of Australia. He recounts the plight of Brian Close and John Edrich at Old Trafford in 1976 as payback to Tony Greig's grovel remark.

He charts his career highs and lows, including kicking out the stumps in the first Test against New Zealand at Carisbrook in February in 1980.
